Khalil Maatouk, a lawyer, legal researcher, and former leftist politician, dedicated his life to Syrian detainees before and during the revolution. He has been held in Syrian regime prisons for 11 years. Maatouk, the director of the Syrian Center for Legal Studies and Research, was arrested on October 2, 2012, along with his colleague and assistant, Mohammed Zazza, while on their way to Damascus. It is believed that he was apprehended at a government checkpoint and has been held in conditions amounting to enforced disappearance ever since, according to Amnesty International. Although authorities deny his arrest, some detainees released in 2015 informed Maatouk's family that they had seen him during their detention in various government-run detention facilities, including Branch 285 of State Security and Branch 235 of Military Intelligence in Damascus. Since then, the family has received no information about his whereabouts.
